One of my Brazilian-Japanese students asked me to show the class her favourite Korean pop video. It was a boring ballad, the video showing a girl with a guy falling for an older guy who’s also falling for her….who then accidentally spills some kind of lighter fluid into her eyes. She’s rushed off to hospital and later her bandages are unwound from her face and her eyes are perfectly fine again.
And at the end of the video she hunts down the older guy, who’s vanished, and finds him on a park bench wearing dark shades. Yes dear reader, the older guy actually donated his own eyes out of love so she could see again. Cue hospital surgery flashback. And the girl sees him on the bench and puts the pieces together and is too mortified to say hello. The video ends with her standing near the bench, face in her hands, as the guy remains seated, obliviously tapping in front of him with a stick. I lost my jaw somewhere on the floor.
